FREE: A Night with Broadway Talent
FREE EVENT. A trio of talent responsible for the success of Broadway musical Legally Blonde and Tony-winning revival South Pacific will explore their work at tomorrow night’s Spotlight Night at 5th Avenue Theatre.
The evening starts at 7pm, when composer Laurence O’Keefe and producer Hal Luftig dissect the making of Legally Blonde, including the personal reservoirs O’Keefe had to tap to write songs like “Omigod You Guys” for the 2007 sorority girl bash, while also crafting Bat Boy: The Musical in the same lifetime. Meanwhile, Luftig brings 20 years of Broadway and off-Broadway experience to the conversation; his most recent projects include producing current revival West Side Story and new musical Catch Me If You Can, which made its debut at 5th Avenue last year.
In the second part of the evening, hear from director Bartlett Sher, Seattle’s golden boy and Intiman Theatre’s outgoing artistic director who led the revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific to seven Tonys in 2008. Find out how Sher made the World War II love story accessible for a new era of theater-goers.
The night ends with a look at the masters themselves, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, with songs from some of their classics— Oklahoma!, Carousel, Cinderella, and The King and I —performed by Seattle thespians Patti Cohenour, Jessica Skerritt and Eric Ankrim.
Note: The event is free (we’ll say it again: free), so reserve your tickets here or call 5th Avenue’s box office at 206-625-1900.
South Pacific runs from January 29-February 21, and Legally Blonde: The Musical runs from February 23-March 14.
