Met Picks

Beth Ditto’s in the neighborhood! Hear all the Gossip at the Capitol Hill Block Party.
THEATER
It would be a shame not to take in some free Shakespeare in the park with the weather so defiantly beautiful this summer. Try Wooden O Summer Outdoor Theater which offers a Richard III and goes Old West with The Taming of the Shrew (not a crazy notion—Kate and Petruchio were always a bit wild and woolly).
CLASSICAL & MORE
Last weekend for Gilbert and Sullivan buffs to enjoy one of the duo’s later and lesser-known pieces, Utopia, Limited.
DANCE
Lingo Longo this Saturday celebrates the work of local dancer/choreographer KT Niehoff’s fine company.
CONCERTS
The Capitol Hill Block Party offers its best line-up in years—worth braving the hordes of ironic haircuts and look-at-me tees. Don’t miss Moondoggies before they’re too big to play such an event. My picks: The Maldives, The Gossip (bring it on, Beth Ditto!) and The Dutchess and the Duke (who disarmed me last fall).
You know how when Chet Baker sang he sounded just like his trumpet? Well, John Pizzarelli somehow sings like his guitar. It’s a zingy, happy sound—perfect for the salute he’s given the music of Richard Rodgers on his infectious With a Song in My Heart CD. He’s here through Saturday at Jazz Alley singing with his wife, Broadway actor Jessica Molaskey, a smoky cabaret chanteuse in her own right.
Hip-hop hits White River with the KUBE Summer Jam, with Ludacris leading the list.
FILM
The three best Bruce Willis films? I’ll take The Sixth Sense (with a slight weakness for Unbreakable, which everybody hated), Pulp Fiction, and Die Hard, the last of which most people forget was predicted to be a big flop. Instead it’s a pop classic—perhaps the pinnacle of big, boisterous, ’80s-action fun and much-imitated.
VISUAL ARTS
Stroll through the Bellevue Arts Museum Arts Fair and don’t miss the annual Brian Major chalk painting on the sidewalk (sounds cheesy, I know, but it’s always something good).
