I know, I know: I wasn’t Showboat’s biggest fan after opening night at the Village Theatre. And I haven’t changed my mind—it sounds superb (I’m still wowed by that knockout "Bill") but is inexpert with everything else that makes the show so justifiably revered.
I’ve continued to run into musical theater buffs who’ve never seen Showboat. The Village production will cure you of that problem without boring you. It’s truly worth hearing. And now it’s affordable: Subject to availability, if you call the the Village box office (425-392-2202) and say the password “Ol’ Man River” (yeah, it’ll feel silly) you’ll get 50% off the single ticket price for all remaining Issaquah performances through July 3 (it moves to Everett later).
You’ll also make me look good if you told them you read it here.
