I bet we’ve got at least another month of trying to shake off coverage of Michael Jackson’s death. A good remedy, of course, is the music, the timeless and now tainted allure of which will probably pack the Northwest Film Forum’s Michael Jackson Tribute next Tuesday, July 7.

The forum has promised to crank the sound up on Jackson’s greatest music videos—prepare for a little bit of the ol’ queasy/uneasy laughter when Michael says “I’m not like other boys” before turning into a werewolf. We’ll also get early Jackson 5 footage, which is so effervescent it’ll break your heart, as well as that Motown TV special moonwalk (one of those remember-where-you-were moments), clips of his fine performance as the Scarecrow in The Wiz (in which he and Diana Ross, in the film’s simplest evocation of sweet joy, ebulliently ease on down the road), and the 1983 documentary about the making of the “Thriller” video. (I haven’t seen that since I was 16 but can still remember howling at the idea of interviewing Ola Ray, the actress who plays opposite Michael and does nothing but feign sexual interest and scream.)
