Doctor His Eyes

Jackson Browne headlines at two summer concert series

By Steve Wiecking April 24, 2009

Browne comes to town.

I grew up listening to Jackson Browne without really listening to Jackson Browne. Although the man wrote many great songs while he was still a teenager, it takes an adult to catch the brooding reflection inside the laid-back California vibe of his music. Even a big hit like 1972’s "Doctor My Eyes"—in which he observes "People go just where they will/I never noticed them until/I got this feeling that it’s later than it seems"—stings a lot more than I suspected back when I first heard it while lying in a beanbag chair with my dog in the rec room.

I now spend most of my days with the feeling that it’s later than it seems.

Browne’s around for shows that both go on sale April 25. He’ll be appearing Friday, August 21 as part of the Chateau Ste. Michelle Summer Concert Series on a season lineup that includes Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovett and many others. The next night he’s at the Maryhill Winery Amphitheater, a venue also soon welcoming Counting Crows and John Legend with India.Arie (Legend and Arie will be at the Chateau, too).

Order your seats from TicketMaster.

If you catch Browne’s show, I’ll be the guy wincing in recognition when the band kicks into "Fountain of Sorrow"—you know, the one that tells us "You’ve known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight." (Thanks for that, Jackson. Ouch.)
