Third-Billed But First on My List

Ra Ra Riot takes a ride with Death Cab and New Pornographers

By Steve Wiecking March 23, 2009

Don’t worry, I am aware that absolutely no one in Seattle, as previously mentioned here, gives any time to Death Cab for Cutie. Those poor, anonymous guys can’t move a single record in town. Ahem. I nonetheless feel compelled to announce that they’ll be playing Marymoor Park on Saturday, July 18 and tickets go on sale this Saturday at 11am.

The actual billing reads "Death Cab for Cutie with Special Guests: The New Pornographers and Ra Ra Riot." One of the many benefits of working in an office with bright people excited about sharing their interests is that I get to hear new music I never would’ve found on my own; my buying and listening tastes usually have me moving backwards through the years to discover or rediscover artists who peaked well before my time. So while I didn’t need a briefing on The New Pornographers—I’m an up-to-the-minute kind of guy when it comes to pornography—I hadn’t heard of Syracuse, New York sextet Ra Ra Riot until my coworker Kelly handed me their CD The Rhumb Line and swore I’d love it.

She was right. They’ve got that currently hot, brooding ‘80s sound—always led by a sort of woe-is-me singer with a sexy, slightly feminine voice—but it’s lush and string-laden and not derivative. And I cannot get their "Oh La," my favorite cut from the album, out of my head. Even though they’re third-billed, they’ll have me heading to Marymoor this summer so I can stand around with all the many non-Seattleites there to see Death Cab. Perhaps, as Ra Ra Riot suggest in the great live clip below, "We’ve got a lot to learn from each other, we have got to stick together…":
