Property Watch: A Midcentury Time Capsule on Lake Washington

Sweet 1950s features endure in this secluded Seattle home with 60 feet of waterfront.

Tucked at the bottom of a hillside looking over Lake Washington, this 1954 house has a relatively rare combination: a luxurious waterfront setting and untouched midcentury features. The home is almost entirely hidden from street level, down a small drive off Rainier Avenue South and below a parking pad, but it opens up beautifully with seamless water views accented by wood and brick finishes.

The front door leads to a kitchen with some updated appliances, but also what looks like an original dishwasher. A sweet, green-upholstered banquette provides both space-efficient dining space and a divider between the kitchen and what could be a more formal dining area. A sliding glass door leads to a back balcony that stretches the entire length of the house overlooking the water. Around the corner, an entire brick accent wall encloses a minimalist hearth, a recessed firewood nook, and two mantel shelves. Lake-facing picture windows bring the view over here, too.

The coolest part for midcentury enthusiasts is the den downstairs, featuring a wet bar with original yellow countertop, wood cabinetry, hardware, and dishwasher. It reaches back into a wood-lined nook with an extra cabinet, but has an attached hutch that extends into the main area. The full-brick-wall fireplace continues down here, this time with a bench along the bottom. Because of its proximity to the lake, even the windows down here have a pristine water view.

Out back is a short, green lawn leading up to the waterfront, where a new-ish private dock—significantly longer than the backyard—stretches out into the lake, with a swim ladder on the end and room for whatever watercraft you might have.
