When MLK Came to Seattle: A Talk on Civil Rights in the Pacific Northwest

When Martin Luther King, Jr. came to Seattle in 1961 to advocate for civil rights and an end to housing discrimination in the Pacific Northwest, thousands came to hear him, but a local church also refused to host him. Learn more about King's historic visit to Seattle and the civil rights movement in the region at this talk by local historian and Evergreen State College visiting faculty member Trevor Griffey.

Seattle Civil Rights in the 1960s, Seattle Public Library, Douglass-Truth Branch, 2300 E. Yesler Way, Sat, Nov. 9, 3:00pm–4:30pm. Free.

Three Reindeer and a Camel

'Tis the season for reindeer photos. Join Dasher, Blitzen, Jingle, and a camel named Curley for some shoot-your-own holiday photos as they kick off the annual Reindeer Festival at Ballard gardening store Swansons Nursery.

Reindeer Photos, Sat, November 9–Sun, November 10, 10am–2pm both days, Swansons Nursery, 9701 15th Ave NW, Seattle, free.

Metro Transit Funding Coalition

Just days after Gov. Jay Inslee proposed a special session involving a new Boeing contract agreement, the Downtown Seattle Association, King County Executive Dow Constantine, King County Council member Larry Phillips, and members of the transportation coalition Move King County Now will hold a press conference to push for funding for King County Metro—which is facing a budget shortfall that could cost the region 17 percent of Metro service.

Metro Transit Funding Coalition, Fri, November 8, noon, Westlake Park, 401 Pine St.

Equity Summit

The Puget Sound Regional Council, the group that plans and directs investments in the region's rapid transportation infrastructure, has helped put together a summit for community members to come toss around ideas about creating equitable development and healthy communities in the Puget Sound region.

The two-day summit kicks off this Friday, with a welcome speech from Constantine.

Puget Sound Equity Summit, Fri, November 8, 5–8:30pm to Sat, November 9, 8am–3:30pm, Highline Community College (Student Union Building B), 2400 S 240th St, Des Moines, WA, free.
