Unveiling U-District's New Mural

Join Mayor McGinn and Councilwoman Sally Bagshaw as they help unveil The North Ave Mural in the University District, painted by members of the community at a series of community paint days last month.

The mural project is a response to recommendations by the Seattle Police Department to reduce crime via environmental design (called Crime Prevention through Environmental Design).

Seattle's Small and Simple Projects Fund for community development contributed $13,360 to fund the project.

Unveiling of the North Avenue Mural, Sat, October 5, noon–2pm, corner of University Way NE & 50th St. NE (behind Jack in the Box), free.

A Depressed Cake Shop in Seattle

The Depressed Cake Shop, a fundraising idea conceived in the UK that now pops up in over 30 cities around the world, will visit Seattle with their literally sullen baked goods (all the cakes and baked goods are gray) to combat mental illness.

Entry is free, and proceeds from the goodies will go to the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Greater Seattle.

The Depressed Cake Shop Seattle, Sat, October 5, 10am–4pm, Sole Repair Shop, 1001 E PikeSeattle.

Pawsitive Open Houses

Pet adoption organization Pawsitive Alliance has arranged its second annual Statewide Shelter open house, a day when animal shelters across Washington state will open up to showcase their work for animals in need and recruit volunteers.

Ready for adoption? The event flyer offers $5 off adoption fees at participating shelters (listed on the event page).

Statewide Shelter Open House Event, Sat, October 5, select WA state animal shelters, hours vary by shelter.

For Friday

The Royal Room

Josh did an "Isn't it Weird That..." back in March saying a music club in Columbia City—not Capitol Hill, Belltown, or downtown—had the most adventurous music programming in the city

Proof. This Friday night CC's Royal Room presents jazz trumpeter/vocalist/composer Bria Skonberg—a candidate on lots of hepcat lists for new jazz talent of the year.

She opens for Dayna Stephens' acclaimed saxophone trio.

Jazz at the Royal Room, Fri, October 4, 5000 Rainier Ave. S., opening show free, main act $18.
