PubliCalendar: A Civic Cocktail, an Optimistic Tech Talk, and a Mayoral Forum

Today's picks for civic nerds.

By Shirley Qiu September 30, 2013

For Wednesday

Civic Cocktail

CityClub brings together community members, leaders, and journalists to talk about some of today's pressing civic issues—i.e., the mayor's race. Join the cocktail event to trade ideas with Seattle Times vet Joni Balter, (cool choice) former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels, and Interim Seattle Police Chief Jim Pugel, to name just a few.

Civic Cocktail, Wed, October 2, 6pm, The Palace Ballroom, 2100 Fifth Avenue, Seattle, $12 ($15 at the door).

For Tuesday

Improving Thinking with Technology

Clive Thompson, freelance tech writer for Wired and The New York Times, is coming to Town Hall Seattle this week to tell us why there's no need to worry— the internet and technology is actually improving our minds.

The talk is based on his book, Smarter Than You Think, which explains how modern technology is enhancing our cognitive abilities.

Clive Thompson: Technology is Improving Our Minds, Tues, October 1, 6:30pm, Town Hall Seattle, $5.

For Monday

Mayoral Forum

With general elections just over a month, mayoral forum season is in full swing. The League of Women Voters will hold theirs tonight at Seattle Center for incumbent Mike McGinn and state senator Ed Murray to duke it out over historic preservation, the arts, and urban design.

Jim Kelly, executive director of King County cultural services agency 4Culture, will moderate.

Mayoral Candidates Forum, Mon, September 30, 6:30–8:30pm, Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center, 201 Mercer St, Seattle, free.
