Some Notes on Last Night's Sounders Loss

By SoundersNerd August 21, 2009

It's hard to pinpoint how exactly we fell apart in our 0-1 loss to New England (only our second loss at home). Was it the numerous and glaring defensive errors? Our utterly incompetent offense? The general overall lack of cohesion? Or that we hardly  took any shots? Or that Montero is a marked man and beaten to a pulp? Or that Zakuani was shut completely down? Or that we shouldn't let Montero take a PK seconds after taking some cleats in the guts, and minutes after blocking a shot with the side of his head?

So many possibilities. Let's stick with the jerseys: We lost cause we didn't wear blue.

It was a hard loss. A few notes:

•I'm not convinced yet on Gonzalez, he went about 50/50: For every good play, he committed a foul. I won't pass judgment yet—it was his third MLS game after all- I just hope he gets to be more consistent.

•I stand by my previous critique of Ianni; he's too unpredictable and unreliable, at one point almost causing a goal against us with a weak back pass to Keller. Patty, my lad, we're close enough to heart failure as is! Keep him up front maybe he can score.

•Hurtado proved himself (again) to be worth his weight in gold and the most with-it, reliable player on the field. Can we please secure his "MLS status" and keep him from returning to Colombia?

•Finally, "consistency" seems to be a common theme, from Keller post-game: "At some time we need to also go for a 3, 4, 5-game run with the same team on the field and start to build some real camaraderie", adding: ““Nothing would be worse for me than to have as good a season as we’ve had and then fizzle out at the end. It’s truly important that we really step it up in the next couple of weeks and show that we’re legit.”

Our busy schedule is back, flying to Houston on Sunday.
