Phillips Releases First TV Ad
In keeping with the optimistic, "We can do anything" theme of his race for King County Executive, KC Council member Larry Phillips just released a first TV that emphasizes innovations that have been made in the county over the years and concludes, "Opportunity is King."
My take: Phillips' performance is stiff and a little painful to watch (he's a politician, not an actor), but the commercial is well shot, and the tag line, "opportunity is King," is memorable—though not as punchy as his opponent Dow Constantine's own tag line, "We're with Dow."

Phillips' campaign manager, Scott Whiteaker, says the campaign is doing a "substantial" ad buy on cable stations like MSNBC, CNBC, CNN and Discovery. "We will have a constant presence on TV up through the August 18 primary," he says.
Interestingly—unlike Ross Hunter, whose ad explicitly refers to him as a "Democrat," and Dow Constantine, whose tag line is "the progressive Democrat"—Phillips' ad doesn't identify him with any party. Full transcript below the jump.
(Funky music. Phillips, walking, with Puget Sound in the background).
Phillips: This is King County. We can do anything we put our minds to.
(New background. Pike Place Market fish throwers.)
We catch fish out of thin air.
(Switch to shot of Phillips holding Kindle upside down, flipping it right side up, smiling)
We're changing the way people read books.
(Phillips, standing. In background: Fred Hutch Cancer Center)
We're finding cures for cancer.
(Phillips, walking, as light rail train passes by).
We build transit on time and under budget.
(Phillips, standing in front of original Pike Place Starbucks, holding Starbucks mug).
We made coffee famous.
(Phillips standing in front of Boeing headquarters...)
We invented commercial air travel...
(... and Microsoft, holding a laptop.)
... and the personal computer.
(Closeup in front of downtown Seattle).
Let's see South Carolina do that. (A reference to the possibility that Boeing may move its manufacturing plant to South Carolina.)
(In front of Seattle).
As King County Executive, I'm going to create jobs, protect public health, and fix county government. And we can do it, 'cause in our county, opportunity is king.
(Split screen; "Opportunity is King" turns into "Opportunity is King County.")
