Burke-Gilman Trail Opponents for Mallahan

By Erica C. Barnett October 28, 2009

The Cascade Bicycle Club—which initially endorsed Mayor Greg Nickels but switched their support to Mike McGinn after Nickels lost in the primary—has compiled a list of folks who oppose the completion of the "missing link" of the Burke-Gilman bike trail and also support McGinn's opponent, Joe Mallahan. Mallahan has been reluctant to say whether he supports the completion of the "missing link," which has near-unanimous support among the current mayor and City Council. His opponent, Mike McGinn, supports completing the trail.

As we've reported, Mallahan has gotten contributions from Burke-Gilman opponents, including Fremont developer Suzie Burke and Salmon Bay Sand  and Gravel lobbyist George Griffin. Since our last report on the issue, however, Mallahan has racked up even more contributions from trail opponents. Burke has given an over-the-limit contribution to Mallahan of  $800; meanwhile, Ballard Oil, another longtime opponent of the extension, has contributed $700. And, one contribution we missed: Beth Miller, executive director of the Ballard Chamber of Commerce and another trail opponent, gave $50 to Mallahan on the day of the August primary.
