Does the brand new Downtown Dr. Martens store have legs?

October 1, 2009

New on Second Avenue, across the street from Turf, the diviest dive diner in town, and a few steps south of 1521, that really gorgeous condo high-rise (if you’ve been inside, you know the gorgeousness of which I speak): A Dr. Martens shop.

I passed by yesterday on accident and asked when the store is set to open and was told ‘tomorrow’ which would of course be today.

The whole 90s thing has certainly been kicking around for awhile now and just about all of those girls who do the most referenced and influential here’s-what-I-wore-today blogs (to go back in time to our first discussion of all that, complete with links to the aforementioned style-gazing girls, click here) work the tongue-out Doc look — or some designer version of the same — into their weekly routines.

Not to mention the highly iconic Brit model Agyness Deyn and the recent Raf Simmons collaboration. Wowza. We also talked about the Dr. Martens thing in the post-post discussion of the Opening Ceremony-Pendleton tie-in here.

Still, I wouldn’t have expected a stand-alone shop on this fairly random stretch of Downtown. (Wasn’t long ago that a dear friend of mine spent her Saturdays volunteering at the Needle Exchange in, I believe, that very same piece of property.)

At any rate, it made me think about the John Fluevog shop around the corner, where they’ve been waxing grunge-stalgic since, well, the time of grunge. I poked around in both shops; the slideshow here proves it.

Let me know what you think: Will you be lacing up a pair any time soon?
