Why I Secretly Like Winterfest

Hint: It’s not the giant snow globes.

1. The Fisher Pavilion ice rink and all of its denizens: the poor dad inching his way along the edge; amateur hockey players looking like they want to check someone; the lone figure skater, twirling her toe pick like a weapon; couples hanging on for dear life in mittens. And, of course, the kids. They’re fearless. I just grab a coffee and take in the view. Ice rink open thru Jan 2; Sun-Thu 11-8; Fri & Sat 11-10; Dec 24 closes at 4; Dec 25 closed; Dec 31 closes at 11:30. $7 adults, $5 children ages 6-12, $2 children 5 and under. Cash only.

2. Adorable children ogling the turn-of-the-century winter village and train set—and the adults who also can’t help themselves. (The details really are pretty impressive; see the mini-slideshow above.) Center House, thru Dec 31, 10-7, free.

Seattle Center’s Winterfest runs through December 31.
