The Beer

One of the many highlights of the annual Seattle Beer Week—which is coming up on its eighth rendition on May 12-22—is the introduction of the celebration's official beer, created by a different brewery each year. This year, Reuben’s Brews in Ballard got the nod, and it didn’t take co-founder and brewmaster, Adam Robbings, much time to decide what kind of beer he’d be making.

Going with an IPA was a no-brainer for the North London native, who remembers arriving in Seattle and being surprised by how many people in the Pacific Northwest actually enjoyed the bittersweet hoppiness.

The only restriction Seattle Beer Week placed on Robbings was his creation needed to be sessionable, because “you know, it’s a beer week, you don’t want to get hammered and destroyed with one pint,” he says. The result is Reuben's Brews Daily Pale, which is available on draft and in sharp newspaper-inspired cans and provides that full, hoppy, high-ABV taste without rendering its drinker inoperable

Okay, I get it, it tastes like an IPA and doesn’t get me drunk like one, but what does it taste like? Well, it’s very “fruit-forward” says Robbings. “It’s almost like a tropical fruit juice.” Beer lovers will be able to drink this brew all through summer; it will be a great choice for those who want to quench their thirst.

It may become a go-to for those SBW attendees that want to be able to remember the week’s events, which start with the opening ceremony May 12 at Reuben’s Brews. This is where the first keg of Daily Pale will be tapped, and where the annual opening night pub crawl begins.

The Calendar

With a week's worth of festivities that amounts to over 70 scheduled events there's something for lager lovers and sourphiles alike; here are just a few that might be particularly entertaining.

If all this talk about IPA has your mouth watering then don’t miss the IPA Brunch at Elysian Tangletown.

Beer can architects can put their skills to use at the can building competition at Pub at Piper’s Creek is scheduled. It’s BYOT (bring your own tools) and no fire can be used. Sign up at the pub where a full list of rules will be available.

Yes, sour beer is a great combination, thus all the taps at Brouwer's Cafe will be replaced with these face-scrunching beers. For more information and a list of sour brews that will be on tap go to SBW's events page

Can building is too easy though, right? There’s also the annual beer can derby at The Pine Box on May 14. Make a car out of an empty can then race it down the track, and remember, win or lose, you can still booze.

Beveridge Place Pub will be hosting the Bodacious Beverages fest that features 25 one-of-a-kind beers, from sweet to sour.

All beer, all day, every day of the beer week. These events are just a few on the lineup. Get the full list of events, locations, and beer week news here. And remember, it’s the 21st century; if you’re not able to drive, there’s an app for that.
