Opt Out of Phone Book Delivery Starting Tomorrow
Starting tomorrow, Seattle residents will be able to opt out of receiving unwanted Yellow Pages phone books by registering their names and addresses with the city.
Three yellow pages companies sued the city last year, arguing that the registry (the first of its kind in the nation) violated their right to free speech (AKA the freedom to dump unwanted garbage on people's doorsteps); thinking better of that tactic after their lawsuit stalled, the companies subsequently launched a charm offensive, arguing that the industry's voluntary system had reduced waste from phone books on its own, making the law unnecessary.
The registry officially goes live tomorrow morning.
