What: Kyra Wines Chenin Blanc Columbia Valley 2012 $13

Where: Fremont Wine Warehouse, Soul Wine, Pike & Western, Wine World & Spirits, Madison Cellars

Why: Though chenin blanc remains a darling of the sommelier set, consumers have turned their attention elsewhere in recent years. One of the effects of this is a decrease in chenin blanc production. Another is that the existing chenin blanc bottles are consistently well priced relative to the quality.

Kyra Wines in Moses Lake is the work of Kyra and Bruce Baerlocher. The couple makes a diverse lineup of wines, with a particular emphasis on crafting wines that pair well with food.

In the 2012 Kyra Chenin Blanc we find abundant tropical fruit aromas and flavors—particularly kiwi and pineapple—along with notes of flowers and honeycomb. The rich fruit flavors are beautifully framed by chenin's natural acidity, part of what makes the variety fit so well with food. Whereas many white wines from Washington's warm 2012 vintage come in at over 14 percent alcohol, this one is listed at just 11.5 percent, making it a perfect lunch and brunch-time wine. Try it with spicy fare or seafood to see it at its best.
