Art Intern

Seattle Met is currently seeking smart and creative design interns to help with the production of our full-color magazine. The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in 4- to 5-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of each candidate. We are flexible with student schedules during the academic year, and the internship can be used to fulfill school credit. There is also the possibility to be paid for ad design as a freelancer.

Depending on skill level, art intern opportunities may include page design and layout, photo research, marketing/collateral design, inputting editorial corrections, spot illustration, scanning and adjusting photos, ad design (paid as freelance), participating in team brainstorming meetings, and assisting with some administrative tasks.

When interns have proved successful on smaller art assignments, they may have the opportunity to contribute to or even design departments or features. We want our interns to walk away with strong clips that they have earned.

The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in design, photography, illustration, publishing, or journalism, have a good understanding of print design, a working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and Mac OS X, the ability to juggle several assignments at once, and have an interest in publication design.

Editorial Interns

Seattle Met is seeking smart and outgoing interns for our editorial department, located in Seattle, Washington. We are now accepting applications for our winter/spring internship in all beats, or areas of concentration: News and Politics, Food and Drink, the Arts, Style and Bridal, and Travel and Tourism, Social Media, Copyediting. Fall internships start in mid-September.

What We Offer

Learn firsthand how an award-winning magazine and website are put together. Editorial interns are responsible for fact-checking; primary research and reporting for food and drink and arts blogs; editing blog posts for typos, bad links, and for optimized positioning in web searches; writing event and business listings; participating in team brainstorms; assisting editors in conceptualizing and/or executing features such as Best Doctors and multimedia projects such as slide shows, audio, and/or video content; publishing magazine content to our website using our content management system; editing blogs for SEO; and assisting with some administrative tasks.

Interns are expected to work closely with the respective editors of their beat and must be willing to pitch in where needed in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Interns who shine at the simpler tasks will have the opportunity to work on larger projects, such as contributing to features and writing departments. We want our interns to walk away with strong clips that they have earned.

The position requires a minimum of 20 hours a week in 4- to 5-hour stints between the hours of 8:30am and 5:30pm weekdays.

About You

The ideal candidate is eager, independent, and wants to learn. Candidates should be working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the liberal arts, especially journalism, English literature, publishing, or creative writing; graduates are also accepted. Successful candidates commonly have previous editorial experience at school magazines, newspapers, or journals; strong interest in magazine writing; good phone and research skills; and the ability to juggle several assignments at once. Interns must be located in the Seattle area during the internship. Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, and content management systems is helpful but not required. Digital photography and/or video experience is helpful but not required.

Compensation

Unpaid; students may take the internship for college credit. And, ahem, you will learn firsthand how an award-winning magazine and website are put together.

  •  creating, updating and assembling sales materials  
  •  assisting account executives with various projects  
  •  compiling and managing advertising databases  
  •  marketing collateral distribution  
  •  assisting with sales/marketing events  
  •  participating in team meetings  
  •  assisting with other various administrative tasks (data entry, filing, mailing projects)
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in publishing, advertising, marketing/PR, business, or communications. Must have experience working with Word and Excel and be a master at multitasking.

The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in four- to five-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of the candidate. Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following:

  •   assisting with marketing/event coordination and production: pre-, day-of-, and post-event assistance (site planning, electrical and staging needs, décor/design and overall coordination)
  •    data entry, filing, mailing projects
  •    assisting in advertising department, including media tracking
  •    creating, updating and assembling sales materials
  •    assisting account executives with various projects 
  •    participating in team meetings, and being a team player in general
  •    compiling and managing event/advertising databases

Custom Editorial Intern

SagaCity Media is looking for smart, motivated interns to join the custom editorial department, located in Seattle, Washington. We are currently considering applications for our winter/spring internship. The custom division creates a host of local travel and tourism publications, from the official Washington State Visitors’ Guide and Visit Seattle to the Washington State Wine Tour Guide.

What We Offer

You won’t be getting anyone coffee here; at custom you’ll learn firsthand how editorial content is put together. Editorial interns are responsible for fact-checking, research and reporting, writing e-newsletter content, participating in team brainstorms, assisting editors in conceptualizing and/or executing features, editing, proofreading, and performing some administrative tasks.
