We're pretty big on winter neutrals in Seattle, so we think it's safe to declare black and gold the unofficial colors of December—despite the festive brights surrounding the holidays. Edgy digits are a great way to shake up feminine silhouettes and gala gowns, and something about black nails just makes you feel like a badass.

Check out our favorite ways to wear this month's rocker-chic nails:

Go matte
Add a top coat of matte finisher (like this one from Sephora) to polished nails for a soft, muted look. Then tip nails in glossy black or gold for extra dimension.

Remeber that unlike a traditional top coat that will help hide any imperfections, matte polish will highlight them, so apply your base with care.

Sophisticated sparkles
It's difficult to rock sparkly nails and keep the look modern and mature. Our solution? Apply glitter polish sparingly to the tips of your digits or entirely on just one nail, while keeping the rest solid.

We love the grown-up feel of Deborah Lippmann's Boom Boom Pow ($20 at Barneys), which has 24 karat gold dust in the formula.

Get Creative
Grab some rhinestones, tape, a polish pen, and go for it. Have some time? Pull our your tweezers and attempt the Michael Kors–inspired studded polish design (left) blogger Nailasaurus created using tiny bullion beads.

Try painting on a reverse French manicure using hole-punch reinforcement stickers, or drawing detailed graphics with a toothpick.

Whatever way you go, you're sure to nail it (get it?) at your next holiday soirée.
