The Coolest Ski Video of the Winter

Ever do a yard sale in someone’s actual yard?

Warren Miller may be the granddaddy of ski films (check out our exhaustive profile on his ascent from ski bum to movie mogul), but this ski video out of British Columbia takes the genre to a whole new level.

It’s a clip from All.I.Can, a longer film by Whistler-based Sherpas Cinema. It was shot in Trail, a small town in eastern BC. Director Dave Mossop notes that urban skiing is nothing new, but he approached it with a new filmmaking style. “[The skier is] on one fluid line throughout the city,” he says.

Mossop was inspired by directors like Andrei Tarkovsky, Stanley Kubrick, and David Fincher; the music is LCD Soundsystem. Those industrial smelter towers in the background? They’re meant to add “an environmental hint to the mise-en-scène,” says Mossop. The skier is JP Auclair, a noted Canadian freestyler and ski-company founder (so he can probably spare the pair he ripped up on the pavement).

All.I.Can is available on DVD and iTunes, and is part of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, where it won Best Feature-Length Mountain Film. If you missed the fest’s Seattle stop last week, you can catch it in North Bend today, Port Townsend on Saturday, in Pullman on January 31, and throughout Oregon this spring.

Watch it below, or larger here. It starts slow and moody but kicks it up around the 2:00 mark.
