This one probably belongs in Sauced, but my generous fellow content monkey Jessica decided to throw me a bone because she knows no one reads Left Field. (Actually, she just wasn’t hip to some of the requisite baseball jargon, so instead of suffering the indignity of having me stand over her shoulder and blather about sabermetrics as she typed, she tossed it to me. Moving on …)
In a nifty little “Welcome Back, Junior!” promotion that went horribly awry, the Bookstore Bar is running a special on selected beers, wherein you get said selected beers for whatever Ken Griffey Jr.‘s current batting average is. So today, for example, since the Kid is batting a paltry .200, you can get a Washington Wheat for two bones. If he goes 2 for 4 tonight against the A’s (I know, I know, but that’s why I said “if” …) and bumps his average up to .218, you’ll pay $2.18 for whatever the selected beer is tomorrow. Make sense?
Griffey’s a career .287 batter, so this probably seemed like a much better idea when someone at the bar drew it up on a napkin a month ago. But hey, it’s a good deal for you. You can almost — almost — say that Junior bought you a round.
