The Brunch Gods Giveth; the Brunch Gods Taketh Away

One of Seattle's best brunches has come to an end. But all is not lost.

After four and a half years of transporting Madison Valley to Spain via morningtime tapas, Harvest Vine served its last brunch on December 28. Owner Carolin Messier said the menu had a core group of devotees, but sadly not enough customers to sustain service. The restaurant will still serve dinner, obviously, but all is not lost for fans of Basque breakfast and caracolillos: The restaurant will still roll out brunch on special occasions like Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.

Meanwhile, several promising newcomer restaurants have added brunch service of late. James Sherrill of Single Shot sent word over the weekend that his elegant little boite on Summit Ave is now open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm. He’ll serve a basic breakfast, sure, but much of the menu feels Mediterranean, like a Basque-style eggs Benedict with speck, piquillo peppers, and a tomato-tinged hollandaise known as choron sauce. And Tray Kitchen’s brunch lineup of savory pancakes, rice bowls, and four types of congee is generating adoring buzz. Here’s a sample menu.
