Sounders FC has made all the right moves. That’s what José Miguel Romero at the Seattle Times says. Seattle’s first Major League Soccer team brought funnyman Drew Carey into the fold, and he called in some favors to plug the team on air. The team hooked up with the Seahawks and Paul Allen’s Vulcan for some added marketing muscle. They even let the fans pick the team’s name. So obviously they’d nail the opening night ceremonies, right? Yeah, not so much. Apparently, in preparation for the Sounders FC’s first game tomorrow night, the team’s management decided to feed trained doves to some wild hawks last week. But it wasn’t supposed to be that way!
The guys over at HotDogandFriends.com say a well-placed source let it slip that the team had planned to release the doves before the game (because nothing says raucous soccer action like pretty little white doves!) until the birds were attacked and slaughtered by three hawks during a dry-run. The horror …
This does not bode well for the Sounders FC, kids. Having it happen a week before they even start playing — and considering it’s such a gruesome tale … it just feels like the Curse of the Bambino or the Curse of the Billy Goat or, hell, the Curse of Colonel Sanders, you know? Like, 20 years from now, if the Sounders have never made a trip to the MLS Cup — even after hosting it in their first season — people will be looking back on this and saying, “It was the doves!” And then, instead of naming it something cool, like the Curse of the Bloodied Birds or the Curse of the Murderous, Rampaging Hawks, they’ll call it something stupid like, the Curse of the Doves. And that would just be a wasted opportunity.
