Applications are now being accepted for the James Beard Foundation’s 2016 Women in Culinary Leadership Grant, a mentoring program matching women who want to be chefs, restaurant managers, and restaurateurs with leaders who have succeeded before them. The WICL Grant will be awarded to 22 applicants.

Our own Tom Douglas will offer a one-year position with Tom Douglas Restaurants.

Details on the James Beard Foundation site explain how to apply, along with the reason JBF president Susan Ungaro and Chicago/NYC restaurateur Rohini Dey spearheaded the award four years ago: Because women make up fewer than 7 percent of head chef positions across the industry. Says Dey: “The WICL Grant was created to break through the barriers of what I call the ‘gastro ceiling’—a paucity of women as executive chefs and even fewer as leading restaurateurs.”

And hear this, all you prospective Maria Hineses and Renee Ericksons: To date every mentorship graduate has received a job offer from her mentor.

Deadline to apply is January 20.
