Chavez: Friend or Foe? Discuss…

A sulfur-free Obama with his BFF, Chavez

The Professor Layton game series cleans all 2,000 of my nerdy parts. It's a "puzzle mystery" deal, where you knock out brainteasers to find clues and solve a case. The gameplay recalls 8th grade gifted-and-talented class: "Move the matchsticks to spell a word;" "Use math and logic to solve a puzzle;" "Sit alone on the weekend and read Jane Eyre." Oh, 8th grade. The second game of the series, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, came out weeks ago, and it's just as charming and puzzle-y as the first—also, just as bus-friendly. Still, newbies are better off saving $ with the older prequel, as the play is far too similar. If you're fiending for the sequel, Nintendo sent along a Layton advertorial bit the other day, which I would've cast off if it wasn't kinda weird. On Wednesday (tomorrow, the 30th), Nintendo will hide a guy costumed as Layton around downtown Seattle, and he'll have DSes handy. Solve one of his puzzles, win a prize (and possibly the sequel). The catch: Gotta use cryptic clues to find him.To review: Someone dressed as the above dude will lurk around downtown and compete with all the other weirdos for attention by shouting requests to "solve my riddles!", assumedly without a big sign broadcasting that he's some Nintendo rep.Yeah, okay, I'll bite, as this could be an interesting downtown scene. First clue:1) "Professor Layton enjoys fresh air, so don’t spend too much time looking for him indoors."Um, that's helpful? I'll update this post with two more clues from Nintendo—one tonight, and one tomorrow morning. Nintendo's posting their own tips here, as well. Happy hunting.

A lot of tittering amongst the right wing bloggers (all 3 of them) and right wing pundits (too many to count) lately about this photo.  How dare Obama cozy up to such a left wing nutjob!  How dare Obama validate Chavez as a legitimate world leader by shaking his hands and (gasp!) laughing! Doesn’t Obama know that shaking hands and smiling means that America just bent over, spread their cheeks and is readying itself for worst Latin American assramming since the Ricky Martin invasion of the late 1990s?  Doesn’t Obama think about Joe Six-Pack’s anus when he does these things?

Presidential 2012 wannabe Newt Gingrinch didn’t miss the opportunity to wax philiosophical and claim that Obama showed weakness yet again when dealing with foreign leaders—oh, and linked his foreign policy to that of Jimmy Carter. Bowing to the Saudi King + ignoring the North Korean missle test launch + Venezuelan handshake = Jimmy Carter diplomacy.  Smart math there, Newt.  Ouchie.

But there’s another side to this story: Obama had a later interchange with Chavez, with the help of an interpreter.  Here, the exchange had no smiles, even appears O-forceful at times and definitely the body language reads stern.  Check it yourself (click on the image for the full video).

Finger pointing is way stronger than shaking hands.
Finger pointing is way stronger than shaking hands.

Sally Bagshaw—not one to be one-upped by Position 6 incumbent Nick Licata or his challenger, Jessie Israel (both of whom released weird folk-rock campaign videos on YouTube in the last couple of weeks)—has put out a new Youtube ad of her own. In it, the camera follows the candidate as she cruises through neighborhoods around the city, scrawling, "Sally Was Here" in chalk on the sidewalk over a Batman and Robin-style soundtrack.Bagshaw told me last week that she's paying her 32-year-old son $10,000 to spend five weeks making "funny Youtube videos" for her campaign. Worth it?

All this nonsense over how Obama greets foreign leaders is really ridiculous.  Here’s a list of other ‘weakening US standing’ greetings from our past Republican Presidents to Saudi leaders (i.e. Al Qaeda money tree) and/or other communist countries that spread anti-US sentiment:

Bush 43:  King Abdullah & cheek rubbing ain’t just for sissies.

Bush 43: King Abdullah & hand holding Part 1.

Bush 43: King Abdullah & hand holding Part 2.

Bush 43: King Abdullah & Bush are K.I.S.S.I.N.G (but not sitting in a tree)?

Bush 41: Hand holding with Saudi Arabia is all the rage in foreign policy.

Reagan:  Handshake and grin (?) with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko in 1984 when Russia was Public Enemy #1.

Reagan: Handshake with Soviet Secretary Public Enemy Number 1 – Russian leader Gorbachev pre-Geneva, pre-INF treaty ( this is 1985…two years later the two countries ended the cold war)

Reagan: Laughs with King Fahd of Saudi Arabia in 1985.  Mmm. Everyone loves to kiss Saudi Arabian ass!  Mmm mmm…so tasty!

Reagan:  More laughs and touching Saudi Arabian Kings!

And my favorite, popular and ever so ironic Donald Rumsfeld and Saddam Hussein handshake.
