Newspaper writers are vicious in Alabama. Mobile Press-Register columnist Paul Finebaum (you may remember him from such hits as “Sweet Baby James” and “Fire and Rain”) has had just about enough of Lane Kiffin’s nonsense as the new coach of Tennessee’s football team, and he wants him gone … after three months on the job. And man, does he know how to take a guy out at the knees:
“Instead of being known as the coach who conquers [Florida’s] Urban Meyer and [Alabama’s] Nick Saban, his nickname will soon be ‘Lame duck Lane.’”
Oh snap!
Why does this matter here in Seattle? Good question. Because A) Kiffin was an assistant coach at USC at the same time UW’s new coach, Steve Sarkisian, was working there, B) the two are reportedly BFFs, and C) Kiffin’s made some of the same preseason gaffes that his old buddy Sark made, including using a fog machine to simulate a gameday experience for some high school recruits. What they don’t have in common? When Sarkisian screwed up, no one in Seattle was dumb enough (or attention-starved enough) to call for his head. (They just made passive-aggressive jokes about how he was starting to resemble one of his predecessors.) What happened to the South being so genteel and … hospitable?
