A Behind the Scenes Look at Our Teacher of the Year

Washington State’s (Most Instagrammable) Teacher of the Year.

I wanted a crown. Made of pencils. How else to christen Robert Hand, the Teacher of the Year (“Robert Hand Is Washington State’s 2019 Teacher of the Year”)? So I spent an evening with hundreds of pencils, a sharpener, and a glue gun. But on set, Mr. Hand wasn’t so sure. In class he champions being humble. A tiara? Of writing utensils? Not humble. When photographer Brandon Hill complimented his beard, I mentioned my other idea: pencils in those whiskers. He loved it. His daughter’s been sticking things in there for years. That kid’s got a future.

Art Director Jane Sherman designs covers, features, and various departments in Seattle Met. One of her many joys in life is working closely with talented illustrators and photographers to create images that enhance and complement the magazine’s editorial content. She was born in Minneapolis—it’s a lot like Seattle but flatter, and decidedly snowier—and lived there until moving to Seattle in 2007. She cut her teeth in editorial design doing the weekly grind, first as associate art director at City Pages in Minneapolis and eventually producing hundreds of covers—one a week for several years—at Seattle Weekly (some of them even won an award or two).  In her spare time you might find Jane at the dog park with her coonhound Watson, taking a pottery class, drawing, or more likely taking a nap.
