Sunday Bloody Sunday
As a matter of principle (and personal taboo), I don't make predictions.
But based on PubliCola's election predictions, maybe I should start. After all, I was close: I fell over myself lauding Chivas Keep Zach "Thwarten" Thornton in September, and yesterday he won the MLS Keeper of the Year Award.
I consider that 1 for 1.But does "almost" count? I've been praising John Kennedy Hurtado all season and was thrilled he'd been nominated for Defender of the Year. Today, however, the award was thrown to Chad Marshall of the Columbus Crew. Marshall didn't even keep his team from losing last week to Salt Lake, and Seattle's defense is tied (with Houston) for allowing least goals scored. Hurtado deserves more than a nomination.
Though dominating the nominations with seven contenders in nine categories, the Sounders have already lost out —Keeper (Keller), Defense, and Fair Play (Keller again). If Coach of the Year doesn't go to Schmid, don't despair, the Sounders are destined to win Newcomer of the Year: Keller, Ljungberg and Montero are the only three candidates.
If I'm going that far, I might as well make predictions:
Rookie of the Year? Omar Gonzalez, cause Steve says so.
Newcomer? Keller, cause you just can't have the former US Nat Keep join the league and snub him three times.
MVP? Sharlie Joseph: You gotta respect a man who all but single-handedly beat the Sounders.
Sunday in Houston? My big prediction? It'll be really bloody.
Really bloody, if Game One was any guide.
