Here’s Looking at Him

Seattle Met photographer John Keatley gets national recognition

Annie

An award-winning face. (photo courtesy John Keatley)

John Keatley shoots immaculate photographs for Seattle Met’s Passing Through, a column of interviews with visiting celebrities that I often get to write. One of our more memorable encounters was with photographer Annie Liebovitz, whom John, of course, was particularly excited to meet.

His painstaking preparations to shoot an artist he admired paid off: The portrait you see here was one of only 351 photographs chosen from 10,100 submitted to appear in this year’s American Photography 25 silver anniversary book that comes out in hard cover in November (think of it as the bible of the nation’s photography). The photo is in fantastic company—in fact, Liebovitz’s controversial take on Miley Cyrus for Vanity Fair is in the book, too.

John’s contributions have meant much to our magazine. We’re thrilled to see him get the attention he deserves.

Awesome. I loved the photo, so I’m glad John’s getting some recognition for it.
