There’s at least one band not playing at Bumbershoot this weekend, and it’s a good one. Back after a decade-long break, alt-rock godfathers Pavement give their cult following a thrill as they tour behind retrospective Quarantine the Past. They play the Paramount on Sunday.
THEATER Molière loved to make fun of doctors, and Intiman Theatre takes up the torch with its staging of his spirited comedy A Doctor in Spite of Himself, now starring Daniel Breaker. It’s in previews starting Friday.
FILM Back in the ‘70s, Seattle was a funky town, thanks in part to soul supergroup Wheedle’s Groove. Jennifer Maas’s documentary on the band screens all week at Northwest Film Forum, with the Wheedle’s Groove narrator—Sir Mix-a-Lot himself—in attendance on September 9.
One of Akira Kurosawa’s greatest achievements—his grand adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, Ran , which he completed in 1985 at age 75—screens at Varsity Theater.
Plenty of art exhibits opening this weekend, though a few notables—Kurt, Andy Warhol at SAM close on Sept 6. Don’t miss out.
