A couple of blocks from Woodland Park Zoo, this 1906 Craftsman has a distinct look: Tall and narrow, capped with a hipped roof, and decorated with red doors and green shutters. Inside, it’s a playful mix of old and new, with a classic banister staircase, a covered back porch, and an attic that’s been turned into a secret hideout.

Marie McCaffrey and her husband, historian Walt Crowley, moved in during the early 1980s, and it was the first and only home for the power couple behind popular Washington State history resource HistoryLink.org. According to McCaffrey's written history of the home, the website project “was conceived at the dining room table.”

McCaffrey says that the house had been divided up into dormitories at one point—a succession of bible colleges were located across the street until 1977—and that the previous owner spent “several years getting rid of all the little rooms.” The lower level hung onto its separate entertaining spaces, though, with cased openings separating the living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway. But there are some updates, like an extended window bay in the dining room and newer living room built-ins with a window bench. A powder room tucks under the stairs instead of a closet.

Upstairs, find a bath with a clawfoot tub and three bedrooms. The largest one opens to a balcony at the front of the house, but another has a fun little feature: A pull-ladder door leads not to an unfinished storage space, but a cute attic clubhouse lined with skylights.

Three tiers of decks cascade out back, with one to fit every weather pattern or mood. There’s a covered porch, a home amenity that is seriously underutilized in the Northwest. Another, with trellises and a built-in bench, nestles close to the house. The third spreads out below, taking in as much direct sunlight as it can.

This home still has plenty of room for more original touches from the next owner, too: It has a full-height unfinished basement, complete with power and plumbing.
