All the World’s a Studio

When Seattle tried to rain on our parade, er, June/July issue, we retreated indoors for photo shoots.

Early April was cool and wet—not ideal for summery photos. Chona Kasinger nailed the vision of books basking on a beach (“10 PNW Books to Bring to the Beach”), thanks to a bag of sand in her Capitol Hill apartment—her dog Brooklyn even tried to make a cameo. After abandoning plans to shoot boating gear on a sunny dock, Tegra Stone Nuess and I commandeered a captain’s wheel at Captain’s Nautical Supplies in Ballard (“6 Ways to Get the Nautical Look in Seattle”). Justin Gollmer’s style shoot (“Andreya Taylor Is Seattle’s Style Unicorn”) played out in our office lobby—to the quiet dismay of nearby coworkers—and Rihana Jones’s hand-painted backdrop summoned Fourth of July for Quote Unquote (“Citizen University Founder Eric Liu Preaches the Good Word of Civic Engagement”). May our actual summer be as pleasant as the one we generated.

Art Director Jane Sherman designs covers, features, and departments in Seattle Met. One of her many joys in life is working closely with talented illustrators and photographers to create images that enhance and complement the magazine’s editorial content. She was born in Minneapolis—it’s a lot like Seattle but flatter, and decidedly snowier—and lived there until moving to Seattle in 2007. She cut her teeth in editorial design doing the weekly grind, first as associate art director at City Pages in Minneapolis and eventually producing hundreds of covers—one a week for several years—at Seattle Weekly (some of them even won an award or two).  In her spare time you might find Jane on an urban hike, reading, teaching a class, relaxing with family and friends, or more likely taking a nap with her dog.
