Seattle Restaurant News: January 2015

What diners are talking about this month.

More Shiro? Yes please.

Shiro Kashiba in Pike Place Market  It’s a sublime meeting of two Seattle institutions: The city’s most storied sushi chef will step out of a very short retirement to open a restaurant in the former home of Marché and Campagne. Projected open: summer 2015.

Paseo Heartbreak  News of the addictive sandwich shop’s abrupt shuttering (both locations) in November was shocking. The tale that unfolded afterward—former employees suing for unpaid wages, owners filing for bankruptcy, other employees speaking out in their defense—even more so.

Cat Cafe Catfight!  Just kidding—we’re sure the two groups working to open dueling coffee shops stocked with cuddle-for-a-fee felines are more than amicable, especially given their mutual love of cat punnery. Seattle Meowtropolitan is scouting locations on Capitol Hill, while Seattle Kitty Kafe is aiming for the U District.

A Seastar Disappears  January 3 is the last lunch and dinner service for John Howie’s restaurant in South Lake Union. The Bellevue location will continue plying Eastsiders with ahi poke, grilled swordfish, and sushi rolls.

Sara Naftaly Plus Slate Coffee Roasters  Not that we needed another reason to be excited about the new Chophouse Row project, but the doyenne of the former Le Gourmand will open a bakeshop called Amandine in the development taking shape at 11th and Pike. Even more exciting: It will share a space (and some cool coffee-pastry collaborations) with this endearingly geeky local roaster.
