This Week in Restaurant News: The Food Hall of Your Chinese Lunch Dreams

Your Friday dispatch from Seattle Met’s food team.

China Live’s sheng jian bao make 2021 look pretty good.

Behold, China Live

Eater Seattle says China Live, San Francisco’s massive market place and food hall, will open a location at 2107 Westlake early next year. What to expect: Bars! Retail! Open kitchens, peking duck pockets, and…hold me…sheng jian bao. Even in the turbocharged realm of South Lake Union food and drink projects, this is big.

Farewell to the Mexican Grocery

After four decades, Pike Place Market’s Mexican Grocery closes its doors today, Friday February 14. Something I never knew: This market stalwart is affiliated with La Mexicana, the region’s go-to tortilla producer in White Center. New-ish owner Andy Tonkin inherited the shop when he bought La Mexicana in late 2018, and wanted to give the food a much (much) needed upgrade. I was digging the new taco menu, but it sounds like things weren’t penciling financially. Which means, eventually, a new occupant for one of Pike Place Market’s most visible addresses.

It’s a Big Week for Grilled Meat

The grills are sizzling and the vents are going once again in the massive Pike/Pine space once home to Trove. Heong Soon Park’s Meet Korean BBQ opened this week. Park, also the guy behind Pike Place Market’s hidden gem Chan, and neighboring Bacco, added a wood-fired grill to augment some of the meat prep, installed a menu of high-end proteins, and has servers ready to handle the cookery for your table. Per the press release, bar manager Tyler Moore came over from the former Central Smoke, which bodes well for the drinks situation (though I have questions about the term “kocktails”).

Teriyaki Chic

Matthew Parker used to be the creative director for all things Josh Henderson, back in the era of big, bold designs (remember the bear in the lobby of Scout?). Now he’s a teriyaki restaurateur; Parker’s shop Grillbird is now open in a former Winchell’s in West Seattle. The menu strikes a nice balance of old-school and updated, and I bet the space is cute as hell.

Sea-Tac’s Bizarro Pike/Pine

Uh, speaking of food halls?

Ballard Gets a Dog Bar

The My Ballard blog promises food trucks, drinks, TVs, and “an interactive play space.” Yes, it’s totally from the same owner behind Fremont’s new dog bakery.

Meanwhile, on Seattle Met…

A new Salt and Straw.

A new Anchorhead.

This Vietnamese coffee shop sounds rad.
