Visual Art

Abstract Lands

Mark Rediske doesn’t paint the type of landscapes you see hanging in hotel lobbies. Dark, dripping color washes over his encaustic-on-panelboard scenes, focusing on blurred detail rather than the panoramic scope of a place. For more than two decades, the Seattle artist has been exhibiting his creations at Foster/White Gallery, and his latest collection, Distillation, draws on memories of his youth in Minnesota and the interaction between water and sky in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Ryan Adams at Neumos

Ryan Adams has been crafting acclaimed rock and alt-country songs for more than a decade, but that alone doesn’t get mainstream attention. You know what does? Anything Taylor Swift. Adams made national waves in September by rerecording and releasing Swift’s 1989 in his signature style. Keeping with that spirit of homages, a diverse array of Seattle acts, including Katie Kate, Cataldo, and Navvi, come together at Taylor Swift vs. Ryan Adams Cover Night to interpret both artists’ impressive catalogs.

The Sporting Life

Who Let the Bulldogs Out?

National Player of the Year favorite Kyle Wiltjer and his smooth shooting touch travel across the state as the Gonzaga Bulldogs square off against the Tennessee Volunteers in KeyArena’s annual Battle in Seattle. With a pro-quality foreign frontline that boasts Domantas Sabonis (Arvydas’s kid) and half man, half mountain Przemek Karnowski, the Zags should be the best team to hit the court in Seattle this year.

Holidays

A John Waters Christmas

“You can’t avoid Christmas. You have to embrace it, either for the right reasons or the wrong reasons…. You have to use humor to get through Christmas, because it’s a trying time financially and emotionally. I love Christmas, and I don’t say that with irony.”  —John Waters, Paper (2012)

The cult filmmaker and master of shocking, trashy camp makes his annual trek to town with the mischievous and uncouth humor of his one-man holiday show, A John Waters Christmas: Holier and Dirtier.

Theater

The Sound of Music

It’s a (Von) Trapp! This winter 5th Avenue Theatre whisks audiences away to the Austrian hills for a spirited rendition of The Sound of Music. With classic tunes like “My Favorite Things” and “Do-Re-Mi,” it’s the best musical, Nazi-fleeing entertainment option this holiday season.
