Tacoma’s Bid for Domination

Our sibling city’s June events calendar rivals some of Seattle’s best offerings.

Wait a second. When did Tacoma decide to battle Seattle for arts supremacy? Our sibling city’s June events calendar rivals some of Seattle’s best offerings. For starters, Pantages Theater isn’t messing around with back-to-back performances by living legend Tony Bennett (June 15) and kooky pop princess Cyndi Lauper (June 16, broadwaycenter.org), who celebrates the 30th anniversary of her wild-child debut album She’s So Unusual. Tacoma also gets indie cred when Fremont Abbey Arts Center’s intimate concerts-in-churches series Cathedrals politely invades Immanuel Presbyterian Church with folk-baroque pop band Paper Bird (June 21, broadwaycenter.org). And while Taste of Tacoma (June 28–30, tasteoftacoma.com) easily leads to the joke, “I hope Tacoma tastes better than it smells,” it might be enlightening to sample some Northwest cuisine, wine, and craft beer outside Seattle city limits—in Point Defiance Park no less. Well played, Tacoma.
