Monday Morning Pick-Me-Up: Comic-Con, Griffey, FLOTUS, and Colbert

New trailers, emotional introductions, car singing, the return of a character, and more.

THE KID TAKES COOPERSTOWN

Ken Griffey Jr. is officially a Hall of Famer. Rather than wax poetic about his greatness once again, we’ll let him do the talking in the form of his induction speech.

THE REBIRTH OF TRUTHINESS

The best thing about last week’s Republican National Convention? It inspired Stephen Colbert to revisit a little character called Stephen Colbert.

It also allowed Colbert to bring back his friend Jon…

SICK FLO-TUS

First Lady Michelle Obama had a pretty stellar week. Not only did she come out looking pretty great after Melania Trump plagiarized her 2008 Democratic National Convention speech when speaking at the RNC, but she also became the latest guest in James Corden’s ultra popular Carpool Karaoke series. (Though—and I hate to be that guy—Obama didn’t write any of the songs she was singing in the car. I’d heard them all before. #plagiarism)

WONDERFUL NEWS FROM COMIC-CON

Last week’s Comic-Con in San Diego brought out some of the biggest stars to show off the latest nerdy mega-franchises, but one trailer really seemed to capture everyone’s attention. The debut trailer for Wonder Woman wowed fans and won the hype contest in a landslide. It’s already been viewed over 12.7 million times. For comparison, the next closest Comic-Con 2016 trailer is Justice League at over 7.1 million views. And that’s also a Wonder Woman movie. Couple that with the fantastic news that Oscar-winner Brie Larson has been cast as Captain Marvel, and it was a banner week for superheroines.

THE FLAMING C RIDES AGAIN

Speaking of Comic-Con, Conan O’Brien once again took his show on the road to San Diego this year, which resulted in more delightful nerd humor ranging from star-studded fake auditions for young Han Solo to one-of-a-kid superhero costumes.
