MOHAI to Reopen December 29 in South Lake Union

The Museum of History and Industry, now in the Naval Reserve Armory, reopens with exhibits on Seattle cinema and houseboats.

It’s still a few months before the Museum of History and Industry opens in its new South Lake Union location—the renovated Naval Reserve Armory—but there’s already a lineup of initial exhibits to get history buffs buzzing. In addition to a newly designed core collection exploring Seattle’s growth from logging town to tech hub, a  Prologue/Epilogue Theatre (where locals will deliver oral histories), and the Jeff Bezos–funded Center for Innovation (opening Fall 2013), MOHAI has announced the first three temporary exhibits that will occupy the facility’s nearly 50,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Coming to MOHAI in 2012–2013:

Celluloid Seattle: A City at the Movies (Dec 29–Sept 8, 2013) MOHAI examines Seattle’s relationship with the silver screen in an exhibit curated by local film critic Robert Horton. Celluloid Seattle delves into the way the city has been portrayed in film and the history of the moviegoing experience via film clips, recreated minitheatres, and more.

Punctum/Poetry (Dec 29–May 27, 2013)  Nonprofit Arts Corps teams up with MOHAI to pair the museum’s collection of historic photographs with poetry and spoken word works created by Seattle high school students. Punctum/Poetry will be the first in MOHAI’s new Community Focus Gallery.

Still Afloat: A Contemporary History of Seattle’s Floating Homes (June 15, 2013–Nov 3, 2013) Houseboats have long been a fixture in Seattle, especially on Lake Union. Still Afloat highlights the unique history of those who decided life on terra firma wasn’t for them. Explore the houseboat life through architectural designs, photos, oral histories, and a scale model.
