The Little Dormer That Could

Property Watch: Classic Seattle Charm in a Cozy Package

This Tudor-revival home has the look and feel of houses that are normally much bigger in both size and price.

This North Seattle home has the storybook look of many larger Seattle homes of the Tudor-revival era—dormers and all—but in a tidy, 930-square-foot package. Unlike many itty-bitty bungalows, it even has two stories, with two pretty, attic-roof bedrooms on the upper floor leaving room for an efficient common-area layout underneath.

The home sits behind a wide driveway front lawn, its front stoop leading to a small, gabled entryway with a coat closet and then to a spacious living room, complete with hardwood floors and large windows to both the south and east. The staircase is only partially open to the back wall, allowing for some extra airiness without sacrificing wall space.

A galley kitchen with butcher-block countertops is just around the corner—again, only partially open. It leads back into a mudroom with laundry and, around another corner, a recently remodeled bathroom. Local cabinetmakers Kerf Design did the natural wood vanity and medicine cabinet, a nice pop of warmth above white hex floor tiles.

One of three listed bedrooms is on the first floor, but it’s more of a den or office—it has doors to both the kitchen and the living room, creating a circular floor plan when those doors are open.

Upstairs are two more secluded bedrooms, both with sloped ceilings from the dormers. The larger of the pair has built-in cabinets. The other has a more ample closet and crawlspace access, which is really like a large, unfinished closet, right?

A small, covered back porch leads down to a sweet backyard with a full privacy fence and an adorable shed. It even has a covered outdoor potting nook with shelves and a worktable so you can keep it all looking cute.
