Enormous is the operative word at Issaquah’s legendary X—the head on the chilled mugs of spicy root beer, the burger whose edges and fixings are spilling over the sides of the bun, the foot-long hot dog (made by someone who obviously had a ruler), and even the decor, a scrapbook assemblage of ‘50s memorabilia big on car lust but done up like a train wreck. In summer the patio fills up with the Fonz and his friends, but even in cool weather they’re all inside the soda fountain tucking in to real milkshakes and chili burgers and seafood that crunches, choosing the onion rings over the fries (they’re better), and paying entirely appropriate homage to the mother of all root beer floats.
