Washington wine country has two hearts. One beats 20 miles from downtown Seattle, in Woodinville. Though the area has little more than decorative grapevines, it’s now home to over 100 wineries and tasting rooms.

The other is in Walla Walla. Once known mostly for its wheat and sweet onions, in the last 20 years it has become Eastern Washington’s wine haven, with a dramatic expansion of wineries and tasting rooms—now numbering over 120.

Together, Woodinville and Walla Walla account for nearly a quarter of Washington’s 1,000 wineries. This year the Covid-19 pandemic has put serious limitations on actual travel, so here’s a guide to the best wineries each area has to offer—whether you’re planning a safe trip (if you must go to the source, embrace the patio), or placing an online order at your local wine shop so you can travel by the glass.
