Eddie Bauer invented the puffer coat as we know it—and the decades-old brand is at it again, this time with a convertible and reversible jacket.

WASHINGTON, we've got a genuine claim to the puffer coat: After a close call with death by cold, wet weather in the 1930s, local outdoorsman Eddie Bauer (heard of him?) married warm down insulation with a waterproof outer, and the rest was history.

While few of us face that same genuine danger even on our more strenuous hikes up Capitol Hill, there's something to be said for celebrating local lore by simply being as cozy as possible. Here are some of our favorite puffers, updated for fall and winter 2021.

Editor's note: Many of these items are from small local shops and may sell out before we get a chance to update the article with even more cute puffers. Sorry for any frustration!

Paloma Wool Newton Blue Puffy Jacket, Prism Local

$263

Image: Prism Seattle

Spain-based fashion favorite Paloma Wool’s take on the puffer is as charming as you’d expect from a brand known for its cozy knits and trippy prints. The tone-on-tone swirl pattern toes the line between a wear-everywhere neutral and a fashionable statement piece, while recycled down and nylon cement it as a sustainable choice, too.

EBTek™ Reversible Down Jacket, Eddie Bauer Local

$199

Image: Eddie Bauer

Eddie's at it again with a coat that’s a little less survivalist and a little more Sartorialist, but arguably just as transformational. This colorblock puffer’s not only reversible—the sleeves can be removed to turn either side into a cozy vest. That’s (count ‘em) four puffers for the price of one. We especially love the statement coral reverse of the indigo colorway, but this unisex coat comes in classic neutrals, too.

Featherweight Down Vest, Filson Local

$250

Down vests: When you need the warmth of a puffy coat but just can’t wait to get to school to put your arms down. Filson’s version looks characteristically great with both workwear and street looks, but that two-tone colorway isn’t just for show: The shoulders and pockets are reinforced with a water-repellent material to keep the inevitable raindrops at bay. Keep an eye out for restocks of the jacket version (it’s light enough to avoid a Christmas Story redux, promise).
