Micachu and the Shapes were the clear highlight of Friday's slate of bands, but nailing down their mangled future pop can be daunting.

Summary: It was inventive, spastic and manically original. I'm still smiling.

First there is vocalist Mica's chu, a modified guitar that looks like it's been beaten up and down Deerhoof Blvd. a few times. The chu is processed through a computer and effected to sound like no guitar you have heard before; it was more a percussive surround-sound pummeling device then a singer song writer's crying partner.

Then there were the Shapes. Mica's band, consisting of a drummer and deep bass synth player, added bursts of chaotic noise in between Lily Allen-esque pop charmers.

Other quick highs were Starfucker's banging cover of Cindi Lauper's “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and the ever energetic rap duo They Live!, who remain the only group in world to feature a break dancing meth head in their stage show.
