On the spectrum of ways one might fight embedded racism and systemic injustice, ordering crab quiche or porchetta from one of Seattle's Black-owned restaurants is a small thing. But it's immediate, it's direct, and you can do it over and over again. Here are some of our favorite restaurants around the city, currently open for takeout. Catfish Corner: Long a Central District landmark, the restaurant currently dishes out fried catfish and hush puppies for takeout as Catfish Corner Express at 11805 Renton Ave S. Owner Terrell Jackson has a YouTube channel that documents the restaurant and progress on his forthcoming location back in the CD at 23rd and Jackson.
Central Cafe and Juice Bar: Barely open a month before the Covid shutdown, this versatile spot combines coffee, fresh juice, pastries, egg bites, and even the occasional slice of layer cake. Call 206-538-0380 to order.
The Comfort Zone dishes up soothing soul food like fried chicken, gizzards, and catfish with greens inside the Royal Esquire Club in Columbia City. Peruse the menu and call 206-246-2800 for takeout, or place a delivery through the website.
Gravy: A destination-worthy comfort spot on Vashon Island takes pre-orders for family style weekend dinners. Each weekend has its own theme, like a barbecue menu or porchetta on the recent ode to Italy.
JuneBaby: Edouardo Jordan posts a weekly takeout menu of comfort courses like oxtails or prime rib available Thursday through Sunday; JuneBaby recently launched a CSA and rounds out its menu with pantry items like ancient grains pancake mix and housemade ice cream(!).
King Philly: Owner Teddy Graham serves up his excellent cheesesteaks Tuesday-Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 10pm, and Sunday 12pm-8pm. They're on most of the delivery apps, but you can also call 206-722-2434 to order directly.
Mama Sambusa Kitchen: A refugee-owned spot at 8300 Rainier Ave South, serving Somali street food, including the titular savory pastries, as well as sandwiches, salads, and pasta. Call 206-457-9551; hours are 4pm to 4am. They're also on Door Dash and Uber Eats.
Meskel: One of Seattle's best Ethiopian restaurants just reopened for takeout. Cash only; call 206-860-1724 to order.
Mojito: Owner Luam Wersom started as a dishwasher at this popular spot on Lake City Way; now he owns the joint and is responsible for the excellent Latin American and Cuban fare. Order delivery online or peruse the menu and call 206-525-3162.
Pam’s Kitchen: The Wallingford location is open limited hours for takeout and delivery via a few apps. A new-ish cocktail menu means takeout customers can get a rum punch to go with their goat curry or spicy jerk ribs.
Plum Bistro and Plum Chopped: Makini Howell has created a single takeout menu from her two stellar Capitol Hill vegan restaurants, including a family meal that feeds four. Preorder online for curbside pickup.
Spud Fish and Chip Greenlake: Craig Smith and Pam Cordova purchased the 85-year-old landmark a few decades back and now steward the crisp fillets, fried oysters, and clam strips. Order online for pickup or delivery.
Taste of the Caribbean: Jamaican jerk dishes, curries, beef patties, and codfish fritters, available for delivery on the GrubHub or Uber Eats platforms—or check out the menu and call 206-323-9112 for pickup.
Umami Kushi: After years of selling his okazu pan (Japanese-style fried buns stuffed with curry or other excellent fillings) via local coffee shops, Harold Fields now takes direct online orders. His yuzu kosho also ranks among Seattle's best local condiments.
Where Ya At Matt: Matthew Lewis's mobile ode to his native New Orleans arrived in the early days of Seattle's food trucks and remains one of our best. Check Facebook for current locations and menu; right now you can text orders in advance.
