It's Sunny Out...Time to Drink Slushy Cocktails

Here's where to go for a classy cool down.

The Painkiller is a popular choice at Bait Shop.

Who says slushies are just for kids? The grown-up versions of these frozen drinks that churn around in machines are becoming more appealing to bars these days…well at least the ones on Capitol Hill. Finally, some sunny weather has arrived, and with it comes an unassailable need to consume concoctions dispensed from machines. And not the Coke Freestyle kind, either. Here are some places to go for a classy cooldown.

Bait Shop
There are always cocktails on tap, but the slushy machine behind the bar seems to be catching everyone’s attention. The Painkiller, a mixture of rum, pineapple, coconut, orange, and nutmeg, with a pinch of cinnamon, is the crowd favorite and a permanent menu item. It regularly goes for $9, but snatch it from 4 to 6 during happy hour for $2 less. In addition to The Painkiller is a rotating frozen cockatil. Right now Bait Shop is phasing out the Irish Coffee and switching to the Julius Wallbanger containing vodka, orange juice, Galliano, and cream. Anyone in the mood for a boozy creamsicle?

The bar staff invested in a machine last year and has been testing out different combos ever since. Bar manger Adam Fortuna is still working out the recipes for the upcoming season, but has landed on the first slushy that will hit the bar on May 1. The Pink Hook will consist of rye whiskey, punt e mes, maraschino, and fresh grapefruit for $10.

Chico Madrid
Opening just last month, Chico Madrid is already in the game with a ready-to-pour sangria dispenser. While not exactly frozen, the Spanish drink is summery and refreshing and made from wine, sliced seasonal fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, and triple sec. The current version is based on tempranillo, though Chico Madrid hopes to add a white variety soon. And did I mention that you get a whole pint for just $6?

7 Eleven
The classic Slurpee may not contain alcohol, but now you can grab a fifth at the grocery store and make your own, right? The comically enormous slushy drink with its signature straw can admittedly be hard to pass up, especially the new artisanally crafted Berry Freeze Blitz flavor containing 0 percent fruit juice. Yes, we are totally kidding about all of this.
