Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things
Virtual SIFF Cinema hosts the debut of this documentary tracking the career of the First Lady of Jazz. Directed by Leslie Woodhead, the film spans Ella Fitzgerald’s 1934 Apollo Theater appearance and the nearly sixty years of vocal performances that followed. Unique footage and archival interviews knit together the life of this beloved jazz singer who reminds viewers that while the living may or may not be easy, at least it is summertime.

Seattle Iranian Festival Repurposed
Part of the ongoing Virtual Festál 2020 Series, the Iranian Festival is billed as an opportunity to support local Iranian-American businesses. (Its Facebook page updates feature businesses daily.) Welcome messages from members and founders of the Iranian American Community Alliance will kick off the event, while the afternoon promises documentaries and a dance performance from Vancouver Pars Ballet. Just in time for dinner, Sanaz Sani (also known as Persian Momma) will host a virtual cooking event. 12pm

The creator of the 1619 Project (for which she recently won a Pulitzer Prize), Nikole Hannah-Jones will discuss what objectivity means for Black journalists and other journalists of color—particularly in an industry that frequently hews to the idea that the newsroom is no place for identity. It’s one of the most pressing conversations of the moment. Fittingly, she’ll be talking with CityLab staff writer Brentin Mock. 3pm
