Nësträ performs at a Magnuson Park rally. He'll be at 4th the Culture as well.

Saying that the Fourth of July “feels different” this year doesn't go nearly far enough since the holiday celebrates the birth of a country that offered “independence” to some while enslaving and suppressing others. This year, because of coronavirus, a display colorfully signifying military brawn will not bloom and boom over South Lake Union. If you really need them, Puyallup is holding a drive-in fireworks show—sold out, but there’s a waitlist. Or you can tune in for a digital fireworks show (which, let’s be clear, you can do whenever the hell you want via a YouTube video).

Otherwise, if you want to do something beyond grill this weekend, here are some places to show up to support Black lives and, in one case, resist Donald Trump. If you want protests on other days, the defundspd Instagram has a list going. I shouldn't have to say it at this point, but wherever you go, wear a mask and social distance.

4th the Culture
From Eastside 4 Black Lives, this rally at Beacon Hill’s Jefferson Park is less protest than celebration of Black life. Organizers ask attendees to bring picnic blankets and friends for a day of performances from Northwest Tap Connection and Nësträ, as well as an Afro Fashion Show. Noon–5pm, 3801 15th Avenue South

Let’s Get Free: A Day of Action
Hosted by King County Equity Now, a coalition of Black-led organizations, this event centers at Central District’s Africatown. Details are still TBA but it’s subtitled “Fourth of Youlie” so you get the gist. 2pm, East Union Street and 23rd Avenue

Take to the Streets to Demand Trump/Pence #OutNOW
This rally and march, from Refuse Fascism, moves from University Heights Center in the U District to the 50th Street I-5 overpass to drop a banner. It’s predicated, in part, on the argument that without removing Trump and Pence from the White House, “the movement for Black lives and every struggle for justice will be crushed.” 2pm–3:30pm, 5031 University Way Northeast
