Fri, Sept 21
Ben Howard
Since his 2011 breakout album Every Kingdom, singer-songwriter Ben Howard has topped U.S. and UK charts with warm acoustic melodies. In his most recent album, Noonday Dream, he makes a subtle departure from his early indie-pop hits towards haunting, ambient folk. Paramount Theatre, $50

Kate Neckel: Stories
If you saw Joan Miro’s simple lithographs at Davidson Galleries earlier this year you may well recall them when you see Kate Neckel’s Stories. The Seattle painter works with a similarly swirling brush though these canvases are both busier and more austere. Lines of black and blue river over white. These are mazes, symbols, maps—abstract yet clearly declared. Winston Wätchter, free —Stefan Milne

Sat, Sept 22
Nothing But Thieves
On Nothing But Thieves's recent Broken Machine, lead singer Conor Mason’s falsetto croons cut through classic guitar riffs creating a classic alternative rock sound. While the band credits Radiohead as inspiration, early Panic! At the Disco seems a more fitting comparison. The Showbox Market, $20

Sun, Sept 23
The Heroine Awakens: Rey’s Journey in ‘Star Wars’
Led by Malory Graham (founder of film nonprofit Real Grrls), this talk uses Joseph Campbell’s venerated story structure, The Hero’s Journey, to dissect Star Wars: The Force Awakens. More specifically the talk explores young Rey’s journey to find and be trained by Luke Skywalker. SIFF Film Center, $25

All Weekend
Everything You Touch
After a hiatus from playwriting, TV writer Sheila Callaghan (Shameless, United States of Tara) returns to the stage with her 2015 play, Everything You Touch. The story follows protagonist Jess, as she drives cross-country to visit the deathbed of her estranged mother. Enter Victor, a time-traveling lover and fashion designer, to make this road trip a discerning look at beauty standards in the 21st century. 12th Avenue Arts, $25
