Author Talk with Fany Gerson: Mexican Ice Cream

Master of all things sweet Fany Gerson will make her way to Seattle to give out samples and discuss her new book, Mexican Ice Cream, at Book Larder on Wednesday at 6:30pm. Known for her Brooklyn-based La Newyorkina and Dough, Gerson showcases the many facets and flavors of Mexican ice cream, with plenty of easy-to-follow recipes. Admission is free, and Gerson will sign copies of her book purchased at Book Larder.

Nourished Neighborhood: Community Meals by Succulent Catering
Every month, Succulent Catering makes a free and tasty meal for the public at Pike Place Market’s Atrium Kitchen. But September’s a little different: Chef Traci Post won’t just provide meals for those with limited access to healthy food, but will also match donations to the Houston Food Bank in an effort to help those struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. And in honor of our Southern neighbors, the menu will be thoroughly Tex-Mex, with dishes like chicken and veggie fajitas and a chocolate cake with cinnamon and chile. Lunch starts at 11:30pm and is, as always, free, but donations are much encouraged. (Still thirsty for ways to help? Here's another fundraising campaign...and it involved whiskey.

Capitol Hill Series Release: Scatterbrain
Elysian captures an end of summer vibe with Scatterbrain, a pale ale brewed alongside Stumptown cold brew, almond and coconut milk, and vanilla. To celebrate, Elysian will hold a ceremonial tapping at its Capitol Hill brewhouse at 7pm, followed by a performance by punk rock band Sundries. There’s no cover—rejoice!—and all proceeds from beer sales will go to Lifelong, an organization that seeks to empower people living with or at risk of contracting HIV and other chronic conditions. For once, getting scatterbrained actually helps the community.

East Ballard Oktoberfest
A little known fact: Despite the name, Oktoberfest usually takes place in late September. Four Ballard breweries will celebrate accordingly on Saturday with a pub crawl lead by a traveling oompah band. The festivities start off at Stoup Brewing at 1pm, then head to Populuxe, Lucky Envelope, and lastly Reuben’s Brews. And it wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without something to soak up all the beer, so food trucks will be at each stop: Napkin Friends, Itty Bitty Schnitty, Ravenleaf Food Truck, and Burgerphenia. Each brewery will have at least one Oktoberfest-themed beer as well as a limited-edition stein or boot. Time to dust off your lederhosen.

World of Tea: Rare Japanese Tea
Sure, you could just grab your usual Earl Grey and call it a morning, or you could head down to the Rainier Arts Center and taste unique Japanese teas. Heather Porter will lead class, introducing tea fanatics to unusual methods and rare teas. The tasting session features dark teas, aged teas, and one tea on the brink of extinction. Tickets are $20 and the class runs from 10am to noon.
